The Lady Herders began the volleyball season this past weekend much like they ended the 2017 regular season: on a winning note. At the Douglas Invite Aug. 24-25, Glenrock breezed through bracket play on their way to the semi-finals matchup on Saturday.
In a tough bout against last year’s 2A state runner-up - Wright Lady Panthers - their first loss of the weekend was felt as they dropped the match in two sets, 15-25, 18-25.
“I am honestly super proud of the way we played,” senior Autumn Hiser said. “We were always looking forward to the next point of the game whether the last one was good or bad. We played well as a unit.”
Hiser and the Lady Herders went on to face Pine Bluffs in the third-place game but lost both sets to the Lady Hornets, finishing the tournament in fourth place.
Through the first eight sets on Friday and Saturday, Glenrock showed why they will be a tough team to face in 2A play. In a conference with powerhouse programs like Wright, Sundance and Pine Bluffs, Hiser saw something different from her team in Douglas.
“We played with enthusiasm that we’ve struggled with in past years,” she noted.
Whether or not it was because the invite marked the first action of the season or the Lady Herders feel emboldened by last season’s finish, Hiser senses a change in this year’s team.
“Our team is young but we all step up to help each other on the court,” she said. “This was a good start to our season.”
The Lady Herders return to the court this weekend when they travel to Gillette Aug. 31-Sept. 1 for the Campbell County Invite.
