Two members of the Glenrock community earned a state title last month.
Abby Nunez and Tori Haro were part of the Casper Voltage 16U softball team that went undefeated at the state tournament in Casper July 20-22 and claimed bragging rights.
“We had some setbacks this season but we turned them into motivation,” Nunez said about her team’s season. “Going into the state tournament, I was very excited to show everyone how far we had come.”
The Voltage had no problem getting through pool play July 20, defeating the Rock Springs Storm 9-5 and Cheyenne Extreme 24-5. In the winner’s bracket, the Voltage took care of the Storm once again, breezing past them 21-4.
In the championship, the Voltage faced, you guessed it, the Storm for the third time. The familiarity was too overbearing and the Voltage won 10-0 to lay claim to 16U B softball in Wyoming.
The experience was even more special for Nunez knowing that her friend was on the field with her.
“The best part about the championship is that I did it with my best friend (Tori) by my side,” Nunez said. “Whether we were playing center and left or second and shortstop, we always made a good team.”
Winning the state championship also reminded Nunez of the reality of softball in Wyoming.
Although she and Haro are able to travel to Casper to play for the Voltage, they’d much prefer to stay in their own backyard.
“Since Wyoming doesn’t offer high school softball, there’s been an increase of travel teams all around the state,” she said. “Playing with the Voltage makes me wish that softball could be recognized in Glenrock.”
