Glenrock High School juniors last spring fared at or above the state averages on all areas of the ACT assessment, according to data released by the Wyoming Department of Education.

The WDE released testing results for the Wyoming Test of Proficiency and Progress (WY-TOPP) and Wyoming Alternate Assessment (WY-ALT) as well as the ACT.

For grade 11 last spring, 40 students at GHS took the ACT. The English score average was 16.6, math 17.1, reading 19.0, science 19.0 and composite score average was 18.0.

Statewide, those averages were 17.6 on English, 18.5 on math, 19.2 on reading and 19 on science. The state composite score (across all subjects) was 18.7.

By comparison, Douglas High School juniors last year had an average ACT score of 18.2 on English, 19.0 on math, 18.1 reading, 19.2 science and 18.7 composite.

The ACT was only one area and grade level tested last spring. Students in other grades took Wyoming Test of Proficiency and Progress (WY-TOPP) and Wyoming Alternate Assessment (WY-ALT).

According to WDE, statewide performance in all three tested areas has increased by 1-3% over last year, with English Language Arts (ELA) and science reaching at or above pre-pandemic levels. Student proficiency increased across the board compared to 2023-24. Statewide proficiency in ELA was 55.7%, math was 50.8%, and science was 51.2%.

ELA scores statewide have returned to pre-pandemic achievement levels with an increase of 2.3% this year. Math has seen a steady increase since 2021 and remains only 0.4% below pre-pandemic levels. Science had an increase of 3.2% this year and has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, all grades except sixth grades have had increased achievement over last year’s scoring.

State Superintendent Megan Degenfelder said that a year ago the WDE and Wyoming’s schools had “much work to do.”

“This year’s results certainly reflect reforms and the significant efforts our educators have made across the state. Wyoming doesn’t settle for good enough – we continue to rise,” she stated.

Washakie County School District No. 2 and Ten Sleep K-12 School excelled with top proficiency in all three content areas for a small district for the second year in a row, with 76.9% in ELA, 80.6% in math, and 83.9% in science. This represents their continued efforts on improvement and high achievement over the post-pandemic years.

Glenrock Supt. Coley Shadrick didn’t respond to the Independent’s request for comment on the test scores.
