The message has been clear for the Glenrock Legion Post 9 Knights since the beginning of the season - to play with positivity and fight every game to the end.
The outcome didn’t play to their favor on June 29 at home in the first game of a doubleheader against Chadron, but they fought until the very last out. In the second game of the double dip, the Knights played close but dropped a tough one under the lights at Glenrock High School, 7-5.
“It wasn’t the outcome that we wanted,” Knights player Bryston Jennings said. “But it was definitely an improvement from previous games this season.”
The Knights returned a swath of players from last year’s inaugural team, including Jennings, Alex St Gelais, Gavin Swanson, Aidan Orozco and Eric Suppes.
Regardless of how the scoreboard reads at the conclusion of each game, Jennings and the Knights feel like they’ve learned a great deal this season and are in a position to play to their full potential during the final month of the season.
“From last year to this year I feel that we’re much more organized with what we’re doing,” Jennings said. “The guys who returned from last year know what to expect now. They know it’s much more than just going out and playing baseball.”
Whether Jennings and his teammates know there’s going to be a tough fight or a roll over type of game, they approach each one with a positive mindset that would be sure to impress any coach.
“Even if we don’t get the results we want, I feel it’s the attitude we should continue to carry with us throughout the rest of the season and into next season,” Jennings said. “The guys always look forward to the next game and don’t have the mentality of ‘we’re going to get beat.’”
The fire that the Knights play with was on full display to begin the second game of the doubleheader against Chadron. The leadoff batter hit a line drive past Rylan Orozco in right field and from his first steps out of the box, it looked to be a clear triple. As he made his way around second base, the Knights got the ball into the infield and fired it to third base, tagging Chadon’s leadoff hitter out to begin the game.
Jennings leaped into the air with excitement, signaling a clear shift from game one. It’s the same fire they’ll take with them as they prepare for a month of tournament play before regionals and the state tournament in Sheridan.
“We know a little of what to expect from last season so now we’re just ready to get things rolling,” Jennings said.
The Knights will travel to Rock Springs July 6-8 for a weekend tournament and will travel to Laramie the following weekend, July 13-15 for another tournament.
This year’s regional tournament will be played in Gillette July 18-22.
