A young Glenrock Speech and Debate team showed the rest of the state just what a powerhouse it can be by nabbing the coveted 1A/2A Sweepstakes Award at the Green River Speech and Debate Tournament last weekend.
The team traveled to its first tournament for the school year on Dec. 9-10 to compete at the Green River Rendezvous Speech and Debate Tournament at Green River High School.
This year’s team is made up of 14 novice and five varsity members. Coach Lisa Shadrick said, “I am so excited for this year and the incredible talent that these 19 students have.”
Besides the sweepstakes award, the Glenrock team came home with many goals achieved and trophies in hand, she said. The following team members received the following individual achievements at the tournament:
• R.J. Pfander- semi finals in poetry and drama;
• Raina Cederburg- semi finals in program oral interpretation;
• Kassie Baker- fourth place in program oral interpretation;
• Ryan Lesser- semi finals in humor;
• Enoch Williams semi finals in humor and second place in duet;
• Breanna Maines- semi finals in humor;
• Jossilyn Miller - semi finals in humor;
• Peyton Shadrick- fifth place in oratory;
• Keely Shaye Ottersbach- semi finals in oratory;
• Brennah Mayland- semi finals in drama;
• Cole James- semi finals in drama;
• and Katlyn Coleman - second place in duet and third place in humor.
Shadrick said winning first in the 1A/2A Sweepstakes Award was a great way to cap the tournament for her team.
“This win was a surprise because when, we were 3A, we knew that we would never have the number of entries and placements to beat the much larger 3A schools. Now, we are truly competitive in Wyoming speech and debate” she said.
The team will take a small break from practice during the school’s Christmas break and will renew practices on Jan. 2 to prepare for tournaments at Kelly Walsh, Natrona County High School, National Qualifiers, Worland or the University of Wyoming and state competition.
